Note: infants and children up to 4 years old usually travel free of charge on routes to and from Piraeus.

Piraeus is one of the busiest ports in Greece, serving thousands of passengers every year. The demand for ferry services from Piraeus usually peaks during the summer months, around Christmas and Easter, as well as on other major public holidays and long weekends. 

If you plan on travelling from Piraeus between June and August, we highly recommend booking your tickets at least 1-2 months in advance. The rest of the year, you can book even a few days ahead of your trip, however routes are usually less frequent.

Piraeus, located about 12 km from the center of Athens, is Greece’s most important commercial and passenger port. Check out some useful tips to enjoy your trip from Piraeus to the destination of your choice:

• Confirm the departure gate of your ferry in Piraeus before heading to the port, especially if you are a first-time traveler. The port is extensive, so you may have to walk 10-20 minutes to reach your gate. Alternatively, you can get around the port with the PPA shuttles, which serves passengers free of charge.
• You can travel from the center of Athens and the airport of Athens to the port of Piraeus by public transport (metro, tram, bus). Alternatively, you can reach the port of Piraeus by taxi in about 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
• The port of Piraeus can get very busy, especially during the summer months. Therefore, we advise you to be at the port at least 1 hour before your scheduled departure, especially if you are travelling with a car.

The port of Piraeus is located in the greater Athens area, just 12 km southwest of the center of the capital, and serves daily passenger ferry services to and from the Aegean islands. You can easily reach the port via the intercity railway, metro, bus and taxi. In the area around the port, there are cafés, restaurants, shops, hotels and other useful traveler amenities.

The port is divided into gates (E1-E12), with each gate serving specific destinations.

• E2: Crete, Chios, Mytilene (Lesbos), Ikaria & Samos
• E3: Crete & Kythera (vehicle entrance)
• E4: Kythera (vehicle exit)
• E5: PPA bus terminal & foot passenger entrance

Keep in mind that the departure gates may change depending on traffic, so check the electronic display boards or ask at the port authority information desk to confirm your gate.
