Here are 7 useful tips to help you plan your ferry trip to Tangier:
- Make sure you have all the necessary travel documents. Depending on where you're departing from, you may need a visa, and your passport must be valid for at least 6 months in order to enter Morocco.
- Some crossings to Tangier Med are rather long and do not run daily. By booking in advance, you will have more selection and can take advantage of possible discounts.
- For overnight crossings, it is best to opt for a cabin, especially if you're traveling with a family or children.
- Tangier is well-connected to other Moroccan cities and many other fascinating destinations. Consider traveling with a vehicle, especially if you want the freedom to explore at your own pace once you arrive.
- Be sure to arrive at your departure port 1-2 hours in advance, particularly if you're traveling with a vehicle. Since this is an international route, boarding procedures tend to take more time.
- Since temperatures can differ significantly between your departure port and Tangier, dress in layers and be prepared for changes in weather.
- Extend your trip to Spain by taking a ferry to Algeciras. The trip is very short (just 1.5 hours), and it's a great way to experience both Morocco and Andalusia on one trip!

You can reach Tangier by ferry from 2 ports: Tanger Med, located just outside the city center, and Tanger Ville, within the city.
Tanger Med
The port of Tangier Med is located on the northern coast of Morocco, about 40 km from the center of Tangier. Opened in 2010, it is a modern, well-equipped port that handles most passenger connections with Europe.
Once you arrive, you can travel to Tangier city by car or public transport. The port is connected to the city via the A4 motorway and the N16 coastal road. There are also a free shuttle service within the port and local buses to the city center.
You can also get to Tangier Med by train. There are frequent departures from Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech for Tanger Ville station. Upon arrival, you can take a taxi or bus to Tanger Med.
If you're flying, Tangier-Ibn Battouta International Airport is located about 10 km from the city center. You can easily reach the port from the airport by taxi, rental car or city bus.
Tanger Ville
The historic port of Tangier Ville is located in the city center, just a short walk from the medina, the souks, and many hotels. The port usually operates fast ferry connections with Spain.
Due to its convenient location, it is an ideal port for passengers traveling without vehicles.
Traveler services at the port include ticket offices, ATMs and taxis. A train station is also within walking distance.
