Information about Alonissos
Unlike its cosmopolitan neighbors, Skiathos and Skopelos in the island complex of the Sporades, Alonissos has slowly but steadily built its reputation as a serene destination, ideal for travelers who value authentic experiences, simplicity, and unspoiled landscapes.
Patitiri, the island’s main port and capital, sets the tone with its quaint waterfront lined with cafés, family-owned tavernas, and small shops. Fishing boats add splashes of color to the turquoise canvas of the sea, which is perfectly complemented by the lush hues of the omnipresent pine trees. Just a short drive uphill lies Chora, the old village, where cobblestone alleys weave between stone houses and bougainvillea-draped balconies.
Wild nature is the true protagonist here, surrounding the beaches of Alonissos with their blue-green waters and creating a scenery reminiscent of a watercolor painting. Alonissos is also home to a natural treasure: the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, the largest protected marine area in Europe, home to dolphins, seabirds, and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
Beyond its coast, Alonissos gives you the opportunity to wander through pine forests and olive groves along well-marked hiking trails, opening onto stunning viewpoints that will make you stop and take in the island’s untamed landscape. And, for certified divers, one of the must-experiences in Alonissos is a visit to the Underwater Museum in the shipwreck of Peristera.
As the green heart of the verdant Sporades complex, Alonissos is a feast for all the senses as it quietly but profoundly charms you with its pure beauty. It may be time to see for yourself why it made our list of the 9 best-kept secrets in the Aegean and Ionian!
