Where is Elba?
The island of Elba is located in the Tuscan Archipelago, just off the west coast of Italy, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It lies about 10 km from the mainland port of Piombino in Tuscany, making it one of the most popular seaside family vacation destinations in Italy.
Thanks to its proximity to the Italian mainland, Elba is well-connected by sea all year round. The island has 3 main ports, which serve routes from the mainland, as well as the islands of Pianosa and Corsica: Portoferraio, Rio Marina and Cavo.
Flight or ferry to Elba?
There are 2 main ways to reach the island of Elba: by plane or by ferry.
Elba has a small airport, Marina di Campo Airport, located on the southern part of the island. The airport mainly connects Elba with Florence, Pisa and Milan in Italy and occasionally with a few cities in Germany and Switzerland. Because flight availability is limited, flying to Elba is not always the most practical option.
Traveling by ferry to Elba is arguably the best option, for a variety of reasons:
- The island has 3 different ports and around 50 daily crossings in the summer, giving you great flexibility when planning your trip to Elba.
- Taking the ferry to Elba allows you to bring along your car or camper van and go off the beaten path. For more details, take a look at our Elba camper van vacation guide.
- Ferries are one of the most comfortable ways to bring your pet along for the trip. You can find out more information in our guide on traveling by ferry with pets in Italy.
- Catching the ferry is by far the most scenic option, as you can stroll around and breathe fresh air on the deck, all while overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
- If sustainability is a priority for you, ferries are the most eco-friendly way of visiting Elba. Check out our blog on sustainable ferry travel for more info.
