Can I take my pet on a ferry in Italy?

Yes, in Italy most ferry companies allow passengers to bring their pets on board. This means you can travel either by ferry or hydrofoil with your furry friend and discover the Italian peninsula together.

Depending on the route, ships may have special pet-friendly amenities for a fun and comfortable crossing. For example, you can find cabins designed for pets and on-board kennels.

Before your departure, make sure you get in touch with the company you’re traveling with to find out more about its services and transport conditions.

What documents do I need to travel with my pet by ferry in Italy?

In order to be able to travel with your pet, ferry companies in Italy require certain documents.

For all pets you will have to submit a recent vet certificate indicating vaccinations and treatments. For dogs, a canine registry booklet is also necessary. If you are traveling on an international route, you will need a pet passport.

Keep in mind that ferry operators reserve the right to deny boarding to pets if the owners don’t carry their travel documentation. Therefore, we advise you to inquire with the company you travel with well in advance.

How much is it to travel by ferry with my pet in Italy?

Prices vary depending on the company.

All operators in Italy require passengers to include their pet in the reservation. This means that your dog or cat must also have a valid ticket.

In some cases there may be a small fee, but for other routes there are no extra charges. In both cases, the pet must be included in the passenger's booking. If you plan to book a pet-friendly cabin, the price will be higher.

As for guide dogs, they travel free of charge upon notification to the company. In this case, it will be required to provide proof of the accompanying passenger’s medical condition.

Where can my pet stay on board ferries in Italy?

All ferry companies in Italy require passengers to keep dogs on a leash and muzzled on board. As for other small animals, they should be placed in their carriers or cages.

Companies provide certain extra services for pets depending on the duration of the crossings:

The ships of GNV, Tirrenia, Corsica Ferries, or SNAV, for example, have special pet-friendly cabins. Each comes with anti-odor mats and a linoleum floor for easy cleaning. Some companies (such as Grimaldi Lines), allow up to 3 pets per cabin.

For short routes there are usually no pet cabins, but it is possible to find on-board kennels. Pets are allowed on the outer deck of the ships (always on a leash and under owners' supervision), while they’re usually not allowed in the common and dining areas.

Tip: some companies that operate hydrofoil connections (including Alilauro) usually allow only small or medium-sized pets on board. Larger dogs may be accepted only under special conditions to avoid any inconvenience for other passengers.

Where can my pet go potty on the ship?

When you travel with your pet by ship, you are responsible for its care and needs.

You can walk your dog to dedicated areas for potty on the outer decks of the ships, as long as you make sure to clean afterwards. The same goes for on-board kennels, where you can go and take care of your furry friend's needs.

Tip: don't forget to bring a scooper and waste bags with you, and also a towel to keep the carrier dry and clean at all times.

Is Italy a pet-friendly country?

In recent years, Italy has established itself as one of the most popular destinations for pet owners. Indeed, the Belpaese is very well organized when it comes to planning your vacation with your pet.

From north to south and through the islands, you can find plenty of hotels, B&Bs and apartments that welcome animals, as well as bars and restaurants. In some places you will also find pet-friendly beaches.

What are the best destinations for a pet-friendly vacation in Italy?

In order to choose where to go on vacation with your pet in Italy, you will have to consider several factors: the accommodation, the ability to let your furry friend roam around freely and pet-friendly beaches.

Palermo and Venice are among the Italian cities offering more pet-friendly facilities. Sardinia, on the other hand, could be a good choice for summer holidays, thanks to its beautiful beaches. Porto Quadro beach, near Santa Teresa Gallura, offers a fully equipped area for dogs.

In Campania, near Salerno, you will find Marina di Eboli and its Bau Bau Beach Village, Italy's first tourism village dedicated to pets. From here you will be able to reach the Amalfi Coast in no time!

And if you are thinking of a beach vacation in Liguria, you should consider Savona. The beach in Albissola Marina is not only among the most beautiful in the region, but it has an area entirely dedicated to dogs!
