The capital of Åland, Mariehamn, was founded in 1861 by Alexander II after the Empress Maria. Its wide streets lined with linden trees witness its Russian heritage. Transportation in Mariehamn

Mariehamn is a relatively small town so you can easily get around on foot. Inside the town, you can also get around by the city bus Mariehamnsbussen. The main stop is in the town center at the crossroads of Nygatan and Torggatant. To travel to the countryside from Mariehamn, you can catch a bus from the main station next to the library.

In Mariehamn, there are many taxis that you can use to get to the airport and the ferry terminals. Moreover, Åland is a cycling friendly destination with a great network of cycling tracks and, since the distances are short, biking is one of the best ways to move around and see the surrounding areas. Alternatively, if you don’t bring a vehicle, you can rent a car in one of Åland’s two car renters.
