Travel tips
Here are some practical tips to keep in mind when traveling by ferry to Stockholm:
- During high season and for overnight crossings, we recommend booking your cabin well in advance, as availability is limited.
- If you are a non-EU citizen, ensure that your passport and any required visas are valid before you travel.
- Traveling with your bicycle is allowed on ferries to Stockholm, but you must include a bicycle ticket in your booking.
- You don’t need to worry about carrying cash before or after reaching Stockholm, as most stores, attractions, cafes, and dining establishments in the city follow a cash-free policy.
Best time to book
Ferries to Stockholm operate year-round, but ticket demand varies by season and route.
Summer
June to August is the busiest period, especially on overnight routes from Finland and Estonia. We recommend booking 1 to 2 months in advance, particularly if you’re travelling with a vehicle or need a cabin. Also, note that summer offers longer daylight hours and calmer sea conditions, making for a more comfortable crossing.
Pro travel tip: in July, most locals leave Stockholm for vacation. Therefore, since many shops and restaurants are closed this month, it's better to plan your trip for June or August, when the weather is still warm.
Spring & autumn
From April to May and in September, ticket availability is generally good, and you can often book a few weeks ahead while still finding a wide choice of cabins and departures.
Winter
From October to March, tickets are usually easier to find. Booking 2 to 3 weeks in advance is still recommended, but you can usually find tickets even a few days before departure. You need to keep in mind that weather conditions in the Baltic Sea during the winter can occasionally affect schedules.
Arrival
When traveling to Stockholm by ferry, it’s important to arrive at the port prior to the time of your scheduled departure to allow time for the check-in and boarding procedures:
- Foot passengers: schedule your arrival at the port at least 1 hr before departure.
- Passengers with vehicles: make sure to arrive at the port 1.5-2 hr in advance, especially during high season, as vehicles are checked in and loaded earlier than foot passengers.
Please keep the above tips in minds especially during peak travel periods, such as summer or weekends, when the ports of Tanger Med and Ceuta tend to be busier.
