Where to take the ferry from Chania to Santorini
There is no direct ferry connection between Chania and Santorini, however it is possible to travel to the Cycladic island from the ports of Rethymno, Heraklion and Sitia.
- The nearest port to Chania, where you can catch a ferry to Santorini, is in Rethymno, which is about 66 km away. The bus from Chania to Rethymno takes approximately 1.5 hours, while the journey by car or taxi takes 1 hour.
- Heraklion is about 140 km to the east of Chania, with the ride taking about 2 hours by car and 2.5 hours by bus.
- Finally, Sitia is on the eastern end of Crete, about 266 km from Chania. You can get to Sitia by car in about 4 hours.
Where does the ferry arrive in Santorini?
Ferries from Crete typically dock at the port of Athinios, the main ferry terminal in Santorini. The port is on the western shores of Santorini, about 8 km from Fira and 20 km from the village of Oia.
Around the port, you will find cafés, restaurants and a few shops, as well as useful travel amenities such as ATMs and car rental services.
How long is the ferry ride from Crete to Santorini?
The Heraklion-Santorini ferry takes about 1.5 hours, the Rethymno-Santorini ferry takes just under 2.5 hours, while the Sitia-Santorini ferry needs about 6 hours to reach its destination.
