More specifically, in order to travel from Thessaloniki in northern Greece to the main Sporades islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos) you had to take a bus from the 'Macedonia' central bus station in Thessaloniki and get to the port of Volos. The bus trip from Thessaloniki to Volos is just 2 hours, while from the port of Volos there are daily ferry connections to Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos, all-year-round.

The port of Volos is located 210km from the city of Thessaloniki and it's easily accessible by car or bus. There are daily ferries during the whole year from Volos to Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos while you have options of taking either high-speed or a conventional vessel. The ferry companies that usually serve the crossing from Volos to the Sporades are Blue Star Ferries, Anes Lines, and Aegean Flying Dolphins.
The port of Volos
Volos' port is very close to the city center and very easily accessible from the Volos bus station.

The ferry connection from the port of Volos to Skopelos runs frequently and daily throughout the year and especially during the summer months there are at least 4 crossings per day. Before you book your ferry tickets to Skopelos it might be useful to know that the island has 2 ports:
- The port of the town of Skopelos, in the east side of the island
- The port of Glossa, located on the north-west side of the island
