While other ports of Crete also connect the two islands, the best option for a day trip is to take a ferry from Heraklion to Santorini. This is due to the shorter distance from the port of Heraklion to the port of Santorini (Athinios), which is 63 nautical miles (120 km), compared to other Cretan ports, as well as the fact that this route is operated by high-speed ferries with early departure schedules from Heraklion and a short trip duration of less than 2 hours

When it comes to day trips from Crete to other islands, including Santorini, one thing is for sure: the early bird gets to see as many highlights as possible. Luckily, ferry routes from Heraklion to Santorini are in your favor! Ferries from Heraklion to Santorini run all year round, with Seajets operating at least one daily route. This route offers a departure from Heraklion at 09:00 and arrives at the port of Athinios, the main port for passenger ferries to Santorini, around 10:00. It is also available during the summer, along with a second route operated by Hellenic Seaways, offering a departure at 07:30 from Heraklion and arriving at Santorini at around 09:40.

You can travel with your car or motorbike on both routes, but if you are traveling in the summer, you need to book your passenger and vehicle tickets as early as possible because a day trip from Crete to Santorini is a popular island-hopping excursion. Alternatively, you can rent a small car or motorbike in Santorini or move around the island's main attractions using the island’s public buses.

Return trips from the port of Santorini to Heraklion are available in the afternoon. When planning your day trip itinerary, you should take into account that you need to be at the port at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure.

Also, please note that ferry timetables are subject to change depending on the season. You can always check real-time schedules and book ferry tickets online on Ferryhopper.

After taking in the breathtaking views of the caldera upon your arrival at the port of Athinios, you can take a public bus or a taxi, or drive towards Fira if you are traveling with a vehicle. In about 20 minutes, you will reach the island’s vibrant capital. Once there, you can stroll along the cliffside paths, shop for souvenirs, or simply relax with a coffee or a soft drink as you admire the views of the volcano in the distance. The town's lively atmosphere and traditional Cycladic architecture make it a memorable first stop on your day trip.

If you are a history lover, you can opt for a visit to the Museum of Prehistoric Thira in Fira, which houses ancient artifacts from excavations in the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri and renowned colorful frescoes that stun with their artistry.

From Fira, make your way to the postcard-perfect village of Oia, which is situated approximately 11 km from the capital. Its winding alleys, whitewashed houses, and iconic blue-domed churches are as captivating in person as in photos. Even if you can’t stay for the famous sunset, Oia’s beauty in the daytime is just as enchanting. Tips for a day trip from Crete to Santorini

Time is of the essence in day trips, so to save you time and hassle, we compiled some useful tips for a comfortable and fulfilling day trip from Crete to Santorini:

  • During high season, it is best to be at the departure ports at least 1 hour before departure time. Both Santorini and Heraklion ports are very busy in the summer, and traffic jams are not unheard of either.
  • Santorini is an immensely popular destination, so we recommend booking your day trip ferry tickets at least 1 month before your trip if you plan to travel during the summer.
  • The popularity of Santorini also means that it is best to check if some of the attractions you plan to visit are available for online booking before your trip.
  • Getting around in Santorini can be challenging during high season. The island has an adequate public bus network and taxis, but they sell out fast. Before your day trip, you need to check if a private transfer company may be the best option or if you should opt for a car or motorbike rental. Whether you travel with your vehicle or rent one there, please note that there is limited parking availability in the summer months.
  • Make sure you have room in your backpack because something tells us you will be returning with many souvenirs from Santorini!
