A few words on Spetses ...

Spetses is the island of Bouboulina, the most renowned female hero of the Greek Revolution back in 1821. The architecture of the island denotes the rich and aristocratic background of its residents. To preserve its identity, Spetses is a car-free island. Thus, when visiting Spetses, you have to keep in mind that no cars are allowed apart from the municipality cars!

Regarding the beaches of Spetses, most of them are well organized and provide you with sunbeds and umbrellas. Usually, there is a nice tavern located near the beach, where you can have refreshing drinks and coffee. However, there are also some beaches e.g. Ligoneri that is accessible only by boat -you can hire a sea taxi- or on foot and can give you a bit of privacy.

The Municipality of Spetses every year celebrates the Battle of Nauplia that took place on 8th September 1822 and is considered to be one of the most important battles of the Greek Revolution. To honor this battle the municipality of Spetses hosts Armata, which is a revival of the aforementioned battle and is the larger festival held in Spetses. Apart from Armata, over the last years Spetses host Spetsathlon, a well-known sports event that attracts plenty of athletes from all around Europe.
