How to get from Zante (Zakynthos) to Athens

The island of Zante is connected with regular itineraries to the Peloponnese, and the port of Kyllini in particular. The Zante - Kyllini ferry connection is very frequent throughout the year and from Kyllini you can either take a bus (KTEL) or drive to the city of Athens.

The ferry trip from Zante to Kyllini lasts about 1 hour. Kyllini is located approximately 280 km from Athens so the journey between the two cities is around 3 hours and 30 minutes drive. 

The total trip duration from Zante to Athens, combining a ferry ride and a car or bus journey, can be around 5 hours. 

From Zante (Zakynthos) to Kefalonia 

If you wish to make your return from Zakynthos to Athens a little more interesting you could consider also travelling to the island of Kefalonia. The port of Pessada in Kefalonia is connected with regular itineraries to the port of Zante and the ferry trip is only 1 hour! From Kefalonia you can get ferries to Patras, Ithaca or Corfu as well as Kyllini and Italy

Tips for your ferry trip from Zakynthos

  1. Travelling from Zante to Athens is not currently possible by direct ferry. It is very easy though to take a ferry from Zante to the port of Kyllini in the Peloponnese and then drive or take a bus (KTEL) to Athens. 
  2. The port of Zakynthos can get quite busy, particularly during the summer months when ferries and smaller cruise boats depart to a variety of nearby destinations. We would therefore recommend that you arrive slightly in advance of your ferry departure and if you have any questions about your ferry contact the local port authorities. 
  3. If you choose to travel from Zakynthos to Athens by ferry to Kyllini we would recommend that you stretch a bit your journey to Athens and explore the natural beauty and historical sites of the Peloponnese. For example, the Archaeological site of ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Games started is only 1 hour drive from the port of Kyllini!
